I recently went exploring with two of our granddaughters. We donned safari hats, carried tote bags with snacks and a magnifying glass tucked into one pocket. I love that our new home came with a green space across the street, something I missed in our townhome that we moved from last year. You forget how important the natural world is until it is no longer at your fingertips.
As we set out on our journey, I was afraid we would find little of interest. How could I have been so wrong? After all, I was joined by two inquisitive souls who love to ask questions about their world. We were careful to not pick live flowers, only the ones that had fallen to the ground.
We imagined what kinds of bugs and critters lived in the green grass and bushes. We poked around a dead root sticking up from the soil. We pulled branches to our level to peer at the tree leaves through the magnifying glass. We found a nascent tree stretching next to a full-grown one and asked questions about its chances of surviving against all odds.
If you ever find yourself bored, go for a walk with a child. Or go for a walk with the mindset of a child. The world is full of wonders, right across the street.
