Chill It…

In The Book of Good Habits, Dirk Mathison illustrates how small, daily steps make big differences long term. He reminds me to chill, learn new things, and take time for self-care. I especially like his suggestion to keep a bottle of champagne in the fridge. Be at the ready to celebrate any small triumph.

What if we cared for our worried minds by letting them rest in a quiet, cool place until we had something worthwhile to say or do or celebrate? It sounds frivolous, but my choice to limit exposure to the escalation of bad news is doing exactly that. I can pop into trusted news sources to get a feel for the details of the latest injustice/tragedy/denial of rights/idiocracy but I won’t dwell in the dungeon of doom that the 24-hour news cycle must promote to keep their lights on. Chill, don’t allow their glaring alarms to dim your own beacon of hope. Be like a bottle of champagne resting in a wine chiller, sink into the cool waters of faith that promise light over darkness even when the ways of the world and its humans are beyond comprehension. I expand on the topic of good habits in this Wednesday’s Substack post, Choose Your Own Adventure.
