When I was rocking my babies, I would sing in English and in Spanish. I wished for them to develop an ear for language and an appreciation for different cultures. Back then, I didn’t dream of their futures. I only stepped in and out of the endless days of need (theirs and mine) and tried to survive the struggle of sleep deprivation on top of a frightening new reality that the life of this little one completely depended on me, their father and the home we had built with our own four hands, mostly.
Fast forward decades when they formed their own families with husbands who also loved other cultures, intent on serving in some manner overseas. It was Empty Nest on steroids, one that included our first grandchild being whisked to another continent. As I watched them lumber down the jetway to another life, I wasn’t sure I could handle the gaping hole in my heart. But a friend came to my rescue. She simply said, “You are strong. You will get through. You’ve got this.”
I think of her and her simple truth whenever tough times loom. She was right. I am strong. I will get through. I do have this.
