The following was previously posted in March, 2023. I hope you enjoy the rerun (as I continue to pack and prepare for a move).
What brings you joy? What would you choose to do if you were magically given two extra hours one week? For me it would be active music (passive music is always in the background). Perhaps you know the moment you put an instrument aside, promising to return because the learning curve got a little slippery. You just want to play. Do you have to figure out scales and finger shapes and learn about theory? Maybe no. But then maybe you will never get past Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on the piano or the intro to Batman on the guitar.
What if you had seventeen minutes each day? Could you swing that? Even if you spent that time running piano scales or building up finger calluses, imagine your progress after seven days of seventeen minutes; one hundred and nineteen minutes, just shy of that magical bonus two hours. Pick something to fill that beautiful bounty of time (we can dream can’t we?). I’m going to practice drills, then play my favorite piano concerto as a reward. Twinkle Twinkle will have to wait.
