May, Oui!…

May might be my favorite month. Our family celebrates a birthday, Mother’s Day and an anniversary. May is flowery, bright and full-on Spring. It also ushers in millions of mosquitoes and fruit flies, but I’ll share (even as I swat those pesky biters).

When I was a kid, my mom told us about May Day traditions of her childhood. I wished for a Maypole to dance around, skipping and laughing while weaving colorful ribbons round and round. One year, I made a May Day basket and delivered it to someone’s front door. Was it goofy? Maybe, but I felt tethered to a time long ago. Today, technology steers us away from 3-D connections. Gathering and giving small gifts, hand to hand, is replaced with e-cards, e-gifts and surprises delivered by a stranger (perhaps wearing a gray/blue vest with a smiling arrow on the back).

May is all about in with the new, if not in technology, then in nature. May is fresh, a time for hope and appreciation of all things beautiful. A time to share the gifts with loved ones, hand to hand in a bouquet or a picnic in all the 3-D glory of real life. Welcome May. Return to a time of connection with nature and with others. May, Yes!
