Mini fantasies can be pretend visits to unknown worlds that satisfy some interior itch. Recently I thought about spending a day in Opposite Land, turning nagging complaints into expressions of joy. But Opposite Land is all-inclusive. Every switch is toggled to the other side, not just a chosen few like in the child’s Opposite Day when off becomes on and yes becomes no. All is topsy turvy in Opposite Land.
My one day spent in such a land would turn all that is good in my life into something different, maybe even bad. Would I understand and agree with policies that serve to oppress others and worship the leaders who think they are winning based on money, power and dominion? I’d join the fight against social justice and no longer speak up for equal rights and fair treatment of others. No!
Fantasy aside, I returned to the real world with all the messy, mind-boggling bits, where beauty tangles with tensions and goodness clashes with evidence of the dark side of humankind. I’ll celebrate any scrap of peace, love, joy and music that peeks through the frozen world. What fantasies do you entertain? Could you survive a day in Opposite Land?
