Look down, look all around. Observe Your World. Keep your senses on alert for the new, the colorful, the repeated themes and connections. I’ve been wanting to read “Island” by Aldous Huxley yet again, which begins with a mynah calling “Attention,” and “Here and now, boys, here and now.” Imagine having a bird on your shoulder calling you to be present to this very moment before it evaporates along the path of life like a sundried dewdrop. It only happens with noises off, no devices blocking your view.
Our mind’s eye can snag memories, especially when traveling. I paid attention one night in Glasgow when hundreds of men in kilts and women in gowns converged in the hotel lobby for an epic gala. Without the crutch of photos, I remember the opulence, celebration and noise; details of knives tucked into socks below the kilts, strapless or backless sparkling gowns and handheld beers and cocktails. I secretly wished I’d crashed the all-night party, still going strong at 3 a.m. when we left for our flight. Those scenes have settled in and filled my imagination because I paid attention to the amazing world unfolding in that moment. What will you observe today when you look up, look down, look all around?
