It was a Dark and Stormy Night…

Autumn storms turn the afternoons gloomy. We celebrate sugar-coated Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos. We’ll soon bid goodbye to Daylight Savings time; depressing for night owls like me. These are traditions or seasons, but what of news hits that throw blanket after weighted blanket upon our weary souls? Are we ineffective and quivering balls of worry, consumed by the dark?

No. We may be horrified, frightened and even immobilized, but dark will not win. There is no such thing as a flashdark, capable of sucking the shine from a sunny day. Yet, a tiny flashlight can illuminate an entire room. We have within us our own source of light. Feed that brilliance. Seek that which soothes your soul, especially in the deep dark. How can you brighten your corner of our broken world? Seek beauty, seek joy, connect with others, share a laugh, share a love. Celebrate a tiny green leaf shooting from freshly turned soil. The world needs people who believe in the goodness of man and the wonder of God’s creation. Shake your flashlights, wake up those batteries. Offer a glimmer of hope during dark times. I’ll do the same while offering thanks from deep within my broken heart.
