ELAN Principle 6 is Make Things Happen, the basic premise being to be active in your world, rather than sitting by, sitting out or sitting in. Pick one thing to accomplish this week. We know writing goals and breaking them down into tiny, chewable bits leads to success. Taking a Daddy bite out of a plateful of progress can seem overwhelming. Maybe the term “choke” comes from biting off more than one can chew.
Expressing and dividing aspirations are well and good, but those manageable bites will rot if left untended. I’ve moved on from a piano repertoire of one (Chopsticks) in part because of fundamental skills practice just a few minutes a day. I’m still chicken to play for others, but a binder filled with intermediate songs now fill my life with music, and joy. What of the larger looming goal of sending my written words into the broader world? Every class, writing group, rewrite and reread takes me closer, bite by bite, one thing by one thing.
This week, pick a goal. Do ONE THING and while you are at it, buy into the belief that you will not fail. Powerful. Do it again, each day this week and watch what happens.
