Square Peg…

Being a square peg means the world’s view of perfect roundness rubs against your sharp edges. Roundness means no friction, no tension, no change. It means being okay with the way things are, never seeing a better, or more creative, way. I’m grateful to every artist who resists the rounding. They see with a painful clarity, yet they keep their eyes open. They see and feel and report to others in an effort to illuminate, educate or entertain. Being a square peg means coloring outside the lines with hues that are out of this ordinary world. It means to Observe Your World, the great big everyday world, and notice how disparate things fit together in an odd or new way. It means to ask what if and travel down rabbit holes of wonder. Sometimes it means to reject the status quo or to carve a new path not yet traveled. Often it means to feel out of place when every other person feels right at home. Resist the most uncomfortable urge to mash the squareness into the small hole of mediocrity. Embrace the tension and the friction and widen your world. Then give your square peg free reign.
