TAB is one of my favorite reminders of the importance of watching your language. We don’t often think about the steps that lead to our behavior. It is what happens, deal with it. But there is an attitude that drives that action. Beyond that, there is a thought that informs that attitude. Thought, Attitude, Behavior.
Not long ago, I was driving into town for a meeting with my peers; classmates in a local leadership program. Other members seemed giants in the entrepreneurial or corporate world compared to my grassroots, small scale ELAN courses. I did not feel worthy to schmooze in their midst. The “Fake it Til You Make it” mantra was falling flat. My impoverished attitude nearly made me turn around and return home, a truly bad behavior. I had to think about it, excavate its origin, but there was no basis for the negative thought behind it all. I had as much right as anyone to attend. My attitude changed when I put truth behind my worth as a member of the group, regardless of the letters after my name or zeros at the end of a bank balance. I behaved as if I belonged, because I did. It was one of the best encounters I had with the organization.
Where is your behavior less than ideal? What attitude is behind that deficit? Is there an erroneous thought driving it all? TAB: Thought, Attitude, Behavior.
