Maybe there is a catchier way to say it, but adopt a policy means to make a decision once about an issue that comes up repeatedly. Then stick to it. When we had a landline, I decided to always respond to the urgings of telemarketers with “I have a policy to never participate in phone solicitation.” It shut down the conversation in record time.
One of my favorite adopted policies is to have something to give to strangers, from people on the street asking for help (agape bags are great), to a genuine smile or sincere salutation, especially to those in the service industry. Adopting a policy frees up mental energy. No more debates about the wisdom of offering money to total strangers. The policy is based on love, not fear or judgment. I’ve adopted a policy to honor that which I say is important by putting it first; first thing in the morning, first days of the week. No more wondering how to start my day. That policy is also based on love – of my deepest desire. Think about a policy you can adopt, a decision made now that you will stick to. Then celebrate the boost of mental energy.
