I’ve been practicing saying yes to things. I don’t always feel adequate or prepared, but in every case, the outcome is beyond my expectation. Saying Yes pushes fear aside and makes room for joy.
The Joy of Djembe Drumming ensemble recently played at the Children’s Museum Houston in honor of Black History Month. When our leader asked me to play a solo, I said yes. Then I practiced, because solos are not my forte. How was it? Okay. Not earth-shattering. No standing ovations. Truth be told, it is possible no one noticed my beats were of my own choosing. Still, I count it a success because every time I step up and step out, I am gaining confidence and skill. Saying Yes is scary (I draw the line at roller coasters and bungee jumping). Saying Yes sweeps the dusty pile of Nos from the corner of a too comfy, stagnant life. Saying Yes is fun.
Say Yes and watch what happens.
