Writing is a lonely business. Sure, inspiration comes from the world around you, but it can only become your unique combination and cadence of sounds from the confines of your tiny, cozy writing closet. Writers agree: the act of writing is a solo enterprise. The odd worldview, the passion, and the drive, can make one feel like a flamingo among a flock of less tall, less flashy, less noisy birds.
Imagine finding a space where Flamingos flourish! That was my experience recently at the Kauai Writers Conference. A luscious, colorful land where writers were surrounded by like-minded, similarly-focused and equally quirky souls. Every conversation shared tales of writing projects or frustrations of stabbing at the publishing fortress with a flimsy plastic fork. All were peppered with encouragement and offers to share writings and critiques. Glorious! I’m mentally tapping into the energy and support gathered there while maintaining the confidence and sense of purpose uncovered. It is a tough go, a lonely road, but I’ll stretch out my bright pink neck and squawk.
May all driven writers find such a wildly colorful place, overflowing with ridiculously beautiful imaginations and conversations. Be a Flamingo. Find your flock!
