I do this thing where I cast worry upon a future event. Can you relate? We worry about what might happen. Might. Probably not. Why borrow trouble and waste mental energy on a non-event?
Such thoughts return me to The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. He tells of his intense spiritual awakening after which he felt an undercurrent of peace.
“You have it already. You just can’t feel it because your mind is making too much noise.”
Worry is only noise in my addled mind. Tolle encourages us to live in the moment. Don’t regret the past or fear the future. This very moment, right now, is all we are guaranteed. With that thought in mind, I choose to make the most of it.
Recently, I asked friends how they handle overthinking possibilities of improbable disasters. One shared a lovely video of people singing the Jewish prayer, Shehecheyanu. My daughter shared her favorite Bible verse. I also repeat Isaiah 41:10:
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” NIV
Falling into unnecessary fear blocks blessings. I’ll strive to put that aside and enjoy every uncertain moment as it unfolds.
