I’ve been going to my zen place leading up to Election Day. No small task. Conversations circle around impending doom should the votes swing one way. Or the other. It matters not what color flag you fly or tie you wear, tensions are high. Many feel the very soul of our country hangs in the balance. How have we, a country built on freedom and hope and equality (at least philosophically), come to such a place of hate and exclusion?
No matter the final outcome, I will continue to stand for decency, equality, inclusion, and acceptance of all. I’ll speak out against racist, sexist, elitist remarks and views. I’ll stand strong in my concern for the poor, the underrepresented, the misunderstood and unwelcome. I can surround myself with others who choose a philosophy of plenty versus a policy of protection of the wealthy and privileged. I’ll continue to give small gifts (a bag of snacks, a dollar, a smile and a heartfelt hello) to those asking on the side of the road. I will welcome newcomers, no matter where they came from or how they got here. I’ll choose love over fear. Every time. No matter what because the country that I call home is free and welcoming for all and to all.
