Hearing a bit of newsy insider info is like biting into a big, red, juicy apple. So delicious. So enticing. You don’t even wipe your chin before sharing it. So what if it’s not true? Isn’t that what makes gossip so much fun? The hilarity, the ridiculousness, the fantasy of it all? What? That’s crazy. That can’t be true. But we share for the dopamine hit. We gain some cred when we’re the first to announce the latest scandalous behavior, break up, or over-the-top pronouncement. It’s why we thumb through tabloids, scour the screens, wander in the webs, and watch morning news shows which have (sadly) become celebrity circuses of royal idols, held high above the common folk.
Here’s the truth. Gossip is built of lies, even if based on a tiny piece of the truth. At worst, it is a bald-faced fabrication designed to shock and awe doting followers who buy into the warped agenda that profits none but the speaker. Consider the source. Think about the intent. Wait before you repeat. At least wipe the juice from your lips and while your lips are closed, keep them that way lest you promote the ill-informed, ill-intentioned, ill-gotten gossip, especially when dressed up and disguised as fact.
