Two rhyming words that could be fraternal twins. Agave: the organic sweetness I squirt in my coffee to flavor the real reason behind the steaming cup – caffeine. Agape: unconditional brotherly and sisterly love. Agave Agape: Sweet Love. I’ve been fortunate to experience agape in communities that have landed in my lucky lap throughout my adult life. Such unwavering love enabled me to extend it to my children as they matured. That, and a very healthy sense of humor. It has led me to appreciate and even love others because of differences, not just despite them. Carrying around a sense of agave agape has changed the way I see the world. It has altered the world’s mirror back to me. Passing a stranger on the street is a joy instead of a guarded reluctance to engage with the unknown. And yet, I can be stingy with this agape love, at times fearfully slamming the gate in the protective wall around a fortress of solitude. Doing so blocks the blessing of untold connections. If only there was some daily reminder to encourage me to extend unconditional acceptance to everyone I encounter, like a squirt of agave in my morning joe. So simple. Agave = Agape. Sweet Love.
