Last weekend I went to a football game. I get that college football is a big deal to many. I don’t get why. But I went along, claiming neutrality and even painting my nails lots of colors to support all the teams. I planned to people-watch and my sister suggested I do so with a theme, so I picked one: unexpected beauty. Isn’t it funny how you find what you are looking for? It began with the road trip through a state we used to call home, but in parts we’d rarely traveled. Rolling hills, small towns, blue skies dotted with cotton, and the occasional shock of color in someone’s window box. Beauty is everywhere, if you choose to see it. In the most unexpected places. Even at a football game. I saw pickup trucks blinged out for tailgating, painted faces of those vying for their fifteen seconds of fame on the jumbotron. Even the velvety bass tones of the peanut hawker singing his wares made me smile. I’m happy that I set aside the time to be present, all the way, taking in all the sounds and tastes and smells and sights of a college football game. I sought unexpected beauty, knowing all along I would find it.
