Habitude…

This blog is about TAB, again. A current re-read of “Change Your Brain, Change Your Life,” by Dr. Daniel Amen, is reminding me to examine the originating thought that drives a less than ideal attitude, which in turn drives behavior. TAB, thought>attitude>behavior. Amen’s book is quite dry and technical, but there are valuable exercises to introduce better habits regarding your point of view. More to come on Wednesday.

For today, think of a repeating behavior, a bad attitude habit, a habitude if you will. Maybe it is as simple as cussing at other drivers who are so thoughtless as to pull in front of you, or neglect to give a well-deserved courtesy wave. Maybe it’s your constant nagging of a loved one who always (fill in the blank) and it just drives you nuts! What of more serious mental maladjustments against the ways of the world and those who receive the brunt of your blaming finger? Take that habitude all the way back, to the attitude that makes you react. Then go deeper to the originating thought that drives that bad mood. Chance are, if you examine it, you’ll discover discrepancies with reality. The thought is flawed. Change the thought. Watch what happens.
