Play/Money…

Creatives live to play but there is a flipside: money. It may be sharp edges rubbing against the roundness, but commerce is necessary to share our gifts with the wider world. Otherwise, what’s the point? Picture toppling towers of handmade and thrown pots, each one a thing of sacred beauty, closed to the world for lack of a deal between seller and buyer. Or digital files of amazing words that no one will read relegated to the archives. Maybe it is a back bedroom with oil paintings leaning against the wall and hidden from view. What a shame.

Artists who embrace the good old-fashioned exchange of money for the creations into which they’ve poured their hearts and souls have found a way to balance both sides of the coin. They bravely push their fresh and beautiful babes into a world that may not understand, may criticize or worse, ignore. To you who bring all forms of art into my world, I am cheered, awed, saddened, enlightened, and enriched by the beauty of your works. You encourage me to play every day and remind me of the necessity of commerce lest my words remain in the bottom file of lost archives. Thank you.
