While it’s true I never actually say “I ‘preciate ‘ya,” (twang implied), I am thankful for those who work to bring comfort and joy to my life. Noticing them begets a happy lens that views people as helpful, good, and valuable. Going beyond a cursory thanks means to sincerely wish them well. It means to let them know they are appreciated, along with all the moving parts coming together to appease my wants and needs. Retail workers know that lines of customers can stretch so long they invade dreams when it’s finally time to recline in rest. One sour customer can ruin the whole day, while a sincere expression of thanks can be a balm for a weary soul. Every single person who creates, grows, carries, sells, delivers, and learns things that improve my life is worthy of my thanks; even writers, musicians, creators of beauty. Yes, especially them. I strive to be reckless in tossing around appreciative words with wild abandon. What’s stopping me? Try it yourself and see where it takes you. I’ll bet it will call to mind more opportunities to say “I ‘preciate ya!” and improve the lens through which you view your world.
