I recently witnessed two dogs happily meeting each other, wet nose to wet nose, wagging tails behind. The bigger one had pointy ears and a barrel chest, its person tethered on a leash. The smaller dog was behind a fence, its stubby tail doing double time. A few sniffs in and they were fast friends. Their differences of shape, size or color mattered not. They both wanted the fence out of the way so they could act like dogs in a park, gleefully running toward the adventure of new play. Maybe puppy love means accepting differences without question. Dogs are like small children, new to the playground who say, “I like you. Be my friend and play with me.” Kids, and dogs, don’t care about looks, wealth or any labels. They just want to hug and sniff and even slobber on each other to play and have fun. The next time you meet a stranger, put doubt aside and approach them like a puppy. You probably won’t rub noses or wag tails, but you could shake hands and say hello. No doubt you will both be richer for it.
