Character Reveal…

Deep into draft one of novel two, my main character cavorts and chortles in my writing closet. I don’t worry about quality at this stage. It’s all about populating a page with raveling words. Many revisions will shape them into a book for the reading public. Writing the first draft is like donning flowing robes and dancing in the forest to a song that only you hear. No telling what moves you’ll discover in that free and uninhibited space. 

Putting judgement aside primes my mind to accept ideas that are clearly not my own. Writers will attest to the magic of characters showing you a better way, like a Ouija Board with a mind of its own. Suddenly your fingers are going to new combinations of letters on the keyboard, forming adventitious (not a typo) words and phrases. My main character is so much smarter than the girl I first imagined, and a new friend has joined her on her journey. Where did she come from? Will she be present until the end? What role will she play? I don’t yet know, but our writing sessions are a lot more fun with her joining us.
