Leave it alone. Leave it on the page. Leave it behind. It can mean a lot of things. I have returned from an amazing writers’ camp in Sonoma County. The weather was predicted to be crisp, so I left behind summer tops and bathing suit, instead packing mid-weight layers. I’d left behind my knit cap and warm scarf, in my quest to pack light. Thankfully the sun peeked through every day to warm the chill air and my paltry casual clothes sufficed.
I joyfully reconnected with some new friends from a recent conference and soon connected with other writers, all on a similar path. How wonderful to build a community of Flamingos! Staying in touch, creating a support net for inevitable pitfalls, is a way to increase the value of time (and money) dropped along my writing path. One on one conversations left me with so many gifts: words of encouragement, smiles, thoughtful consideration of my written words. I am reminded to do the same for others, not only within the cozy quarters of camp, but out in the big, wide world. What can I leave behind when parting from family, friends and even strangers? Perhaps my departure from camp left behind something of value; a word or thought that others may return to as they continue their trek on this most arduous but delicious journey.
