I recently tagged along with friends to visit a local textile art exhibit. My first reaction was to refuse the invite, given that it conflicted with a day set aside for writing, all cozy and comfy in my closet. But, as much as I protect my “jammie day,” the pull toward art is greater. For good reason. Opportunities to intake beauty created by another’s hand is always uplifting. The day became a gift of wonder as I studied the art created by various means of manipulating fabric, rope, threads and even fishing nets. What techniques must the artists have learned and how many hours must they have spent to see their visions realized? How many hundreds of yards of tulle must have been purchased, dyed, and gathered to create a floor to ceiling work, all to express an emotion? Or what of a purple river made from woven and painted fishing rope? I was astounded by the realism and beauty of these handcrafted works. Yes, I stole the day away from precious writing time, but my session today will be all the more enhanced because my creative stores have been filled to the brim with an intake of art. Perhaps that’s the secret to a beautiful balance.
