This Monday we continue the sticky wicket of loving and honoring ourselves without sounding self-righteous, ego-centric and (horrors!) conceited. To honor someone is to hold them in high esteem or respect. There will be more discussions in future posts regarding the correct offer of respect only when one is deserving. For now, respect means to offer our best, the seat of honor, the best gifts. It means to express our high regard of them to others. How do we respect (honor) ourselves? One way is to spend time and focused attention in quiet reflection to know ourselves and then to forgive ourselves, especially as we discover ways in which we are different from others. Think of a person you hold in high esteem. How do you honor them? What are your internal thoughts about them? How do you speak of them to others? Now think about your own thoughts about yourself. Observe when they stray away from the respect you deserve. Come back to recognizing the genuine person you are learning to know and appreciate. It’s okay to laugh and smile while thanking yourself for that high praise. Chances are, you deserve it.
